Mertens on United radar

Manchester United have reportedly expressed their interest in landing the signature of Dries Mertens from Serie A side Napoli.

The Red Devils parted ways with Alexis Sanchez (loan) and Romelu Lukaku during the summer and they have since relied on the likes of Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Mason Greenwood for the striking duties.

All three of them have picked up their form as they head into the New Year but the club still seem keen on recruiting an experienced marksman with a view to the forthcoming campaign.

According to Tuttomercatoweb, the Red Devils have held initial talks with the representative of Mertens and they could propose to sign him on a free transfer at the end of the campaign.

Mertens has shown no intention of extending his Napoli contract beyond next summer but the Serie A outfit seem content to keep hold of him for the season rather than sanctioning his mid-season exit.

Mertens has netted 116 goals in nearly 300 appearances for Napoli.
