Manchester United have reportedly launched a formal approach to sign Timo Werner from German side RB Leipzig this summer.

The 23-year-old is widely expected to leave the Bundesliga side this summer and reports have emerged that Liverpool are favourites to land his signature.

It has recently been claimed that the Reds will meet the player's low £25m release clause but The Athletic reports that they will face competition from their arch-rivals United.

United have formally made the move to sign the former Stuttgart graduate and they are hopeful that the assurance of a regular starting spot can convince the marksman to join them.

Barcelona have also been credited with an interest in the Germany international, who has bagged 27 goals and 11 assists for Julian Nagelsmann's side across all competitions this term.

The German has recently spoken about his admiration of Liverpool and manager Jurgen Klopp and for now, the Reds are reckoned as the front-runners to sign him irrespective of whether he is guaranteed a starting role or not.
