Tottenham Hotspur fail with opening bid for Brazilian midfielder
Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly failed with an opening bid to sign midfielder Gerson from Flamengo.
The Brazilian joined Flamengo from AS Roma last summer and he has since made 43 appearances for the club in all competitions.
According to Football.London, Spurs recently made a bid of around £16m for the midfielder but the offer was swiftly rejected by the Brazilian champions.
It is added that Gerson would prefer to remain with the Copa Libertadores holders next term instead of making a return to European football.
Arsenal and Borussia Dortmund have also been credited with an interest in the midfielder but neither of them have yet to make a formal approach.
Meawhile, Jose Mourinho's side are likely to work on a limited budget for the summer amid the financial impact of the coronavirus pandemic.
They are said to be on the look out for bargain, loan and free transfer deals. The club are currently exploring the French market for new signings.
