Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta reportedly had the preference of signing Houssem Aouar ahead of Thomas Partey during the recent transfer window.

The Gunners were linked with both Aouar and Partey during the summer, but they were only able to sign the former from Atletico Madrid on deadline day.

They did make an attempt to land Aouar as well, but their £35m offer fell short of Lyon's reported asking price of around £50m.

According to L'Equipe, Arteta favoured the purchase of Aouar over Partey, but technical director Edu decided otherwise and recruited the latter.

The north London side are likely to make a fresh approach for Aouar at the turn of the year, but they could face competition this time around.

Both Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain have entered the race and the Gunners may have a tough task of convincing the playmaker with the lack of Champions League football.

Arsenal have made an average start to their Premier League campaign and they have registered only nine points from their opening six matches.
