Chelsea leading the race to sign Real Madrid star
Chelsea are reportedly leading the race to sign Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane during this summer's transfer window.
Varane's current deal with Los Blancos expires in 14 months, and he has yet to be convinced to renew his contract.
Madrid are likely to consider his sale this summer, and ESPN reports that the Blues could be leading the pursuit.
Manchester United have also been linked with Varane, but they have switched their focus after learning of the Blues' interest.
The Red Devils appear reluctant to enter a bidding battle, and have turned their attention towards Sevilla's Jules Kounde.
Chelsea are currently fourth in the league standings with a three-point advantage over London rivals West Ham United.
They still have plenty to do to finish in the top four with Manchester City, Arsenal and Leicester City to face.
Champions League football will be essential to their chances of signing Varane during the summer transfer window.
They could also qualify for the elite competition by winning it this season.
