Barcelona eyeing January deal for Arsenal midfield target

Barcelona are reportedly interested in signing Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder Denis Zakaria in January.

The Blaugrana were keen on landing a defensive midfielder this summer, but their plans did not materialise.

Georginio Wijnaldum was the prime target, but he chose to join Paris Saint-Germain instead on a free transfer.

The club could not find another suitable option for the role, but they could address the issue in the New Year.

According to Sport, they are keeping tabs on Zakaria, who has started the season positively for Monchengladbach.

He has struggled with injuries in recent campaigns, but has bagged two goals and one assist from five games this term.

His current deal expires at the end of the season. The Blaugrana are eyeing a cut-price move for his services in January.

Arsenal are also long-term admirers of the Switzerland international. They were linked with him earlier this summer.

Zakaria was touted as an option to replace Granit Xhaka, but the latter ended up signing to sign a new improved contract.
