Arsenal are unlikely to sign Juventus midfielder Arthur Melo before the transfer window closes on Monday night.

The Brazil international has been their prime midfield target this month, but they have failed to strike a suitable agreement.

The hierarchy initially proposed a six-month loan for the 25-year-old, but Juventus made it clear that they won't entertain the proposal.

After a long discussion, technical director Edu Gaspar finalised an 18-month loan for Arthur with an option to buy for around €40 million.

While the Bianconeri agreed to the terms, the Gunners board vetoed the transfer as they were not impressed with the negotiated package.

According to Gianluca Di Marzio, talks have now broken down between the clubs, and no negotiations are due before Monday's deadline.

The Gunners are already looking elsewhere for a new midfield signing. They have recently been linked with Aston Villa's Douglas Luiz.

Luiz could be available before the transfer window closes if Villa succeed in landing Rodrigo Bentancur from Juventus in the coming hours.
