Arsenal have opened talks over a new long-term contract for midfielder Mohamed Elneny, The Athletic reports.

The Egypt international has been an unused substitute for most of the campaign, but has started the last four league games.

His contribution have been key towards the victories, and the club are now prepared to commit him to a new contract.

Elneny started the season as the fourth-choice midfielder behind Granit Xhaka, Thomas Partey and Albert Sambi Lokonga.

An injury to Partey combined with the poor form of Lokonga has seen him become a regular, but it may not be the case next term.

The Gunners have plans of pursuing another marquee midfielder, and reports claim that Youri Tielemans is the number one target.

This would leave Elneny with barely any first-team football, but he has previously said that he is comfortable with the role.

Hence, it appears a no-brainer decision to extend his stay. Elneny is currently one of the lowest earners at the club at £52,000-a-week.
