Chelsea were ready to pay €60m for Ajax midfielder
According to Mike Verweij, Chelsea were ready to pay €60 million for Ajax midfielder Edson Alvarez last summer.
The Blues attempted to sign Alvarez during last summer's transfer window, but they could not convince Ajax into a sale.
Ajax had no time to land a replacement before the transfer deadline and the Dutch giants made the decision to keep him.
It is now reported by Verweij that the Blues were willing to pay €60m for the Mexican. The journalist believes Ajax will regret the choice.
Alvarez has struggled for form over the course of the current season and it appears unlikely that any club will offer a similar fee in future.
Nevertheless, the 25-year-old is expected to push for a move away from Amsterdam after the end of the campaign.
The Mexican has his sights on playing Premier League football and it is left to be seen whether the Blues return for him.
Alvarez has made 29 appearances for the Dutch champions this term.
