Man Utd dumped out of cup

Man Utd were dumped out of the Carling Cup in a shock for the second season in a row. Coventry brought an army of over 10,000 fans to Old Trafford, and they were rewarded for their visit as Coventry defeated the Premier League champions 2-0.

United manager Alex Ferguson sent out a youthful side at Old Trafford and Coventry, backed by 11,000 travelling fans, took full advantage to repeat the feat of Southend United last year.

Despite talking up the possibility of naming Wayne Rooney and Louis Saha in his team, United manager Ferguson only fielded

John O'Shea, Anderson and Nani as the only recognisable performers in the first eleven, but Ferguson had claimed in his programme notes that United's youngsters were good enough to beat Coventry.

Maltese striker Michael Mifsud slid in after 27 minutes to put Coventry ahead and doubled their lead midway through the second half to seal victory for the Midlands club.

The result will go down in Coventry's history for many years.
