Maldini to bid farewell to San Siro

AC Milan legend, Paulo Maldini, would hang up his boots after tonight's game against AS Roma. His first game for Milan was as a 16-year old and since then he had always been a permanent fixture in the first team. The 40-year old finally will bid farewell to San Siro.

A young Maldini, at the age of sixteen, made his debut for AC Milan as a half time substitute for the injured Sergio Battistini against Udinese. He became the peramanent member of the Milan first team from the following season.

A 'one-club-man', Paulo Maldini, is still the world's best defender, although he is 40 years old. He spent twenty four years with his favorite club - Milan - where his father Cesare was a stalwart during the 50s and 60s.

Paulo followed the tradition and he is undoubtedly the best player Milan has had in the 80s and 90s. He has appeared for more than 900 times for Milan, with 645 Serie A caps. He has 126 caps for his country and had been the Italian captain for many years.

The only cup missing from his impeccable resume is the World Cup - he was denied by Brazil in 1994 and by France in 2000. But, when Italy won it in 2006, he had already retired from international football.
