Hummels to Manchester United a done deal?

Manchester United are reportedly closing in on German international Mats Hummels, who would be their third major signing.

  • Arsenal in the front row to sign Dutch striker

  • According to several reports in Spain and England, United believe that they can secure their transfer target for around £20 million. The central defender, who was once valued at close to £25 million, could be secured for a relatively low transfer fee even after impressive World Cup performances.

Borussia Dortmund will still be able to make a substantial profit on the player after signing him for only around €4 million from rivals Bayern Munich in 2009. The player has a contract at Signal Iduna Park until 2017.

United have already spent more than £50 million on two players, but chief executive Ed Woodward recently confirmed that United plan to bring more players to revamp the squad. He also revealed that the club do not have a fixed budget and have money to spend.

Dortmund are unlikely to put up stiff resistance, as they appear ready to accept that Hummels will not stay for long.

Hummels has been linked with Premier League clubs for the last few years, but Dortmund’s valuation of £25 million could have been the hindering aspect.

After the departure of defenders Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic, Louis van Gaal still has options in central defence with the likes of Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Jonny Evans available.
