Arsenal rout Benfica in a pre-season friendly

Yaya Sanogo the star for Arsenal

Arsenal rout Benfica in a pre-season friendly

03 August 2014 - 04:43

Arsene Wenger's compatriot Yaya Sanogo was the unlikely hero for the Gunners as Arsenal thumped Benfica 5-1 in a pre-season friendly on Saturday.

  • Chelsea to accept less than £40m for attacker?
  • West Ham make £45m offer to sign Andrey Santos

  • Sanogo failed to hit the woodwork last season but finally got into scoring ways after 26 minutes when he hit his first goal for Arsenal, with FA Cup hero Aaron Ramsey's slick assist.

Costa Rican World Cup star Joel Campbell was also given a chance to play in the first-team and he found the net in the 40th minute.

Sanogo hit three more goals before the final whistle at 44th, 46th, and 49th minute to finish the match with four goals for him.

Yaya is bound to get lesser chances in the first-team with the presence of compatriot Olivier Giroud and Chilean Alexis Sanchez but his performance was very impressive in Arsenal's first match in the Emirates Cup.

Arsenal's first big signing this summer, Alexis Sanchez, was welcomed with a rapturous reception at the Emirates Stadium when he was brought on in place of Joel Campbell in the 74th minute.

The Portuguese champions and Europa Cup runners-up last season Benfica scored a consolation goal in the 62nd minute as Argentine Nicolas Gaitan, who is reportedly being pursued by Liverpool, found a way past Damian Martinez.

Ex-Southampton defender Calum Chambers played the full 90 minutes while Arsenal's another new signing Mathieu Debuchy remained on the bench.

Arsenal will now meet Ligue 1 giants Monaco in their next match on Sunday which will be their final match in the Emirates Cup.
