French winger Franck Ribery announced his retirement from international football on Wednesday, insisting that he wanted to spare time for his family and play whole-heartedly for his club Bayern Munich.
The 31-year-old made his international debut in 2006, and has won 80 caps for the Blues, scoring on 16 occasions and assisting in 20 others. He was a part of the squad for the World Cup in Brazil last month, but ended up missing the tournament due to an injury.
The player started his club career with Boulogne in 2000, and had spent brief spells with Turkish side Galatasaray and Ligue 1 club Marseille, before moving to the Bundesliga outfit in 2007.
He has so far made 276 appearances for the Bavarians and has won four German titles and one Champions League with the Allianz Arena side.
The three- time French player of the year was also nominated for the Ballon d’Or award in 2013, and finished third behind Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.
“I want to focus on my family and concentrate on my work at Bayern Munich and make way in the national team for the many young and exciting players”, he told German magazine Kicker.
This decision would mean that Ribery would not play in Euro 2016, despite the tournament being held in France.
