Chelsea target Kalidou Koulibaly has extended his contract with Napoli, tying him to the Serie A club until 2012, according to reports in Italy.
In a story that has been confirmed by Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis, Senegalese defender Kalidou Koulibaly has signed a contract extension with the club, meaning his deal will now expire in the summer of 2021.
Koulibaly was a target for Chelsea this summer as Antonio Conte looked to boost his defensive options. The Blues were said to have made a bid of £40 million for the 25-year-old centre-back, as Napoli stood firm in their stance that Koulibaly would not be sold.
The chances of prising Koulibaly away from the San Paolo suffered a further hit when Juventus agreed to meet Gonzalo Higuaín’s €90 million release clause, stealing the Argentinian striker away from Napoli, and meaning that the Partenopei were especially resolute in their desire to hold on to the remaining start of last season’s second place Serie A campaign.
Late in the transfer window Chelsea turned their attention to AC Milan’s 21-year-old centre-back Alessio Romagnoli, but the Rossoneri refused to sell the player they’s bought from AS Roma for €25 million just a year ago.
The Blues were then linked with the likes of Lazio’s Stefan de Vrij and Valencia’s Aymen Abdennour, but ended up re-signing David Luiz from French Champions Paris Saint Germain in a £30 million deal on transfer deadline day.
