Juan Mata reacts to David de Gea speculation

11 February 2017 - 06:23

Manchester United midfielder Juan Mata has played down suggestions that goalkeeper David de Gea could leave Old Trafford at the end of the season.

  • Chelsea midfielder looking forward to London derby vs Spurs
  • Arsenal in the front row to sign Dutch striker

  • The Spanish shot-stopper has once again emerged as a top option for Real Madrid after he failed to earn his dream move a couple of seasons ago.

On Thursday, De Gea insisted that he is content at United when asked on the ongoing speculation, and Mata feels the same with regards to his compatriot's future.

"David is a veteran here already, been here many years. Everyone recognizes his contribution to the team," he told Cadena SER.

"I've not spoken to him about this at all. He is relaxed here, and with too much to think about for the rest of the season, without thinking about the summer."

De Gea is currently contracted to United until the summer of 2019 with the option of an additional year, and this will most likely encourage the club to keep hold of his services unless he pushes for a transfer.

Nevertheless, Real Madrid do have other options on their summer shortlist in Chelsea's Thibaut Courtois and Tottenham Hotspur's Hugo Lloris.
