Premier League leaders Chelsea had sent their scouts to keep a close watch on Roma defender Antonio Rudiger during Germany's 1-0 win over England in an international friendly on Wednesday.
The game was equally contested between both nations on the night with the Three Lions, in particular, having plenty of chances to convert from Tottenham Hotspur's Dele Alli.
Eventually, the clash was settled by a stunning winner outside the box from Germany's Lukas Podolski, who called quits on his international career with a tally of 49 goals and 31 assists in 130 caps for Die Mannschaft.
According to The Mail, Rudiger was the player in focus for Blues scouts at the Signal Iduna Park with Antonio Conte eager to bolster the heart of the defence in the summer.
The likes of Andreas Christensen and Kurt Zouma are expected to play backup in the backline next campaign, but Conte is still eager to add more options with Rudiger back on his radar.
The former Stuttgart man had been the subject of a £24m move to west London last year before a nasty knee injury prior to Euro 2016 ruled out the possibility of the deal.
