Man Utd held as Arsenal go top

02 February 2008 - 18:25

Man Utd had a lucky escape with a point in the Premiership this afternoon as Dimitar Berbatov's early goal looked to have been enough to give Tottenham a massive three points at White Hart Lane. But a late, late Carlos Tevez goal saved United a crucial point.

  • Chelsea midfielder looking forward to London derby vs Spurs
  • Arsenal in the front row to sign Dutch striker

  • That psychological blow made an already testing encounter even more treacherous. Spurs have been revitalised under the studious Ramos and it was they who bore the look of title contenders in a one-sided first half.

Inspired by the clever movement and silky touch of Berbatov, the poise of Jermaine Jenas and the reliably solid defensive combination of Michael Dawson and Jonathan Woodgate, Spurs showed no sign of being cowed.

They might have stolen ahead in the 15th minute when Berbatov's near-post cross was desperately hacked away by Owen Hargreaves, while it took a last-gasp interception from Wes Brown moments later to deny Robbie Keane.

But the visitors' luck did not hold. After a United attack had foundered on Woodgate, Spurs broke at lightning speed. Steed Malbranque tore downfield and slipped a pass to Aaron Lennon.

The England winger, perhaps stung into action by his demotion to the under-21 squad two days previously, cut inside Patrice Evra and, although his cross was palmed away by Edwin van der Sar, the lurking Berbatov stabbed in the rebound.

Ferguson was clearly unimpressed, deploying all three of his substitutes before the hour, but the changes failed to spark his side out of their lethargy.

Instead, they allowed their irritation to get the better of them, with Nani and Nemanja Vidic both earning cautions as the atmosphere grew increasingly tetchy.

United began to turn the screw as the seconds ebbed away but there appeared little danger of an equaliser until virtually the last kick of the game, when Tevez rammed in at the near post.

Arsenal go top of the league tonight with 13 games left in the Premiership. It's going to be a cracking close season.
