Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri has revealed that the club are short in the central defensive department with both Antonio Rudiger and Gary Cahill on the sidelines.

  • Rudiger picked up a fresh knee problem during the recent league clash at Manchester United and that is expected to sideline him for three months following a surgery.

Speaking in a press conference, Sarri acknowledged that Rudiger has been ruled out for the season with a knee concern and that has left them short in the central defence with Cahill struggling with an Achilles tendon problem.

"Cahill is out… it’s a problem with the Achilles tendon. He is out for the moment. I hope to have him back in one week. But he is out so we are in trouble with the centre-backs," he told Sky Sports.

At present, Andreas Christensen and David Luiz are the frontline options to occupy the heart of the backline but Sarri has suggested that Cesar Azpilicueta has been training in the position ahead of the Frankfurt game.

Blues youngster Ethan Ampadu is another, who could slot into the defensive role, but the Welshman is likewise said to be sidelines with an injury which remains unspecified.
