Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has confirmed a major injury blow ahead of the Champions League opener against Atalanta tomorrow.
Martin Odegaard picked up an ankle injury on international duty earlier last week and he missed the north London derby as a result.
It is now revealed that he has suffered a significant injury and could be sidelined for some period of time, Arteta said today:
"After everything was scanned, they showed that there was some damage, especially in one of the ligaments in the ankle so we’re going to miss him."
"I don’t want to [put a timeframe on it] because I am not a doctor but it is something quite significant so we’re going to lose him for a while – hopefully not months but let’s see."
Odegaard has been a catalyst behind the club's playing style over the past few years. He has caught the eye with his ability to provide key passes.
His absence comes as a huge blow for the Gunners who are scheduled to face Premier League champions Manchester City on the road on Sunday.
Kai Havertz could be tasked with playing from the no.10 role this weekend. We could see Leandro Trossard from the false number nine position.
