Wenger: No move for Gourcuff

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has stated that Arsenal are not in the market for Gourcuff as he believes that his squad has sufficient depth at the centre of the park as more players return from injury.

Having made a name for himself after spells at AC Milan and Bordeaux, Gourcuff was snapped up by Lyon for a hefty €22 million. However, he has since struggled to replicate his earlier form and has had many less than impressive displays for Remi Garde's side.

Wenger, meanwhile was reported to be in the market for a winger as he will lose Gervinho for a month in January due to the latter's participation in the African Cup of Nations. With Jack Wilshere out till the new year, it was believed that Gourcuff, by virtue of his versatility, would be able to fulfil both roles in the Arsenal squad.

Reports claimed that Wenger made a bid for Gourcuff in the summer, but the deal fell through. However, it now seems that Wenger will focus his attention on strengthening his attack, with the side having no quality striker should Robin van Persie suffer an injury.

In an interview to Canal+ Wenger said, "He is a player I like a lot and I believe people have been very critical towards him in France. However, we won't be in the winter market for any midfielders as we have players that are coming back from injuries."

Gourcuff himself has played down rumours of a move to Arsenal, claiming that his first priority is to have a good season with Lyon.

He said: "My objective is have a good second part of the season with Lyon which I hope will help me to play at Euro 2012."
