Chelsea, Liverpool breathe sigh of relief after Barcelona rule out defensive move
Chelsea and Liverpool will be breathing a sigh of relief after Barcelona's manager Gerardo Martino told reporters that he will not be bringing in defensive reinforcements this summer. Chelsea's David Luiz and Liverpool's Daniel Agger were linked with moves to the Nou Camp.
Amidst uncertainty over the long term fitness of Barcelona defender Gerard Pique, there had been plenty of speculation linking the Catalan side with a move for a new defender. David Luiz has been linked with a mega money move to Barca for over six months whilst Daniel Agger has more recently been a name frequently mentioned in the Spanish press.
However, there appears to be no plans to add new defenders to Barca's squad, at least in defence.
Martino, Barcelona's coach, said: “We have Puyol, Pique, Mascherano, Bartra, even Adriano. If there's an injury, January transfer window is only a few months away.”
