Cardiff City produced a fighting performance to overpower the league runners up 3-2 at the Cardiff City stadium. This win was The Bluebird's first in the English top flight since their last appearance in April 1962.

The game endured a goalles first half with a penalty appeal turned down for the hosts, and a freekick by Peter Whittingham which was wide of the goal. There were also chances for Manchester City's Ivorian midfielder Yaya Toure and Cardiff's former Manchester United player Frazier Campbell, with both chances missing.

Bosnian Edin Dzeko openned the scoring on 52 minutes with a powerful strike only to be levelled by Aron Gunnarsson 8 minutes later after he pounced on a rebound from a saved Campbell effort, becoming the first Cardiff City player to score for his club since their promotion.

Campbell made it two for the hosts when he scored a Whittingham corner as Joe Hart and Pablo Zabaleta stood still. He added his second of the and his side's third also from a corner.

Alvaro Negredo pulled one back in the final minute of the game to make it 3-2.
