Gareth Bale joins Real Madrid in world record transfer deal

Gareth Bale joins Real Madrid in world record transfer deal

Real Madrid have completed a transfer for Welsh winger Gareth Bale. The player moves to Spain from Tottenham as part of an £85.3 million deal. The player has signed a contract worth a reported £300,000 per week.

The on/off transfer saga looked set to go right down to the wire, as Daniel Levy, Tottenham's chairman known to be a fierce negotiator battled with Real Madrid over a transfer fee.

However, a fee has been agreed yesterday shortly after the Arsenal game and Tottenham will now look forward to life without Bale. Spurs hope the signings of Christian Eriksen and Erik Lamela should be a suitable replacement for Bale.

"I know many players talk of their desire to join the club of their boyhood dream but I can honestly say this is a dream come true," said Real's newest signing.

"I’m now looking forward to the next exciting chapter in my life, playing football for Real Madrid."

Tottenham were understandably distraught that their star player decided to leave the club, with chairman Levy saying: "Gareth was a player we had absolutely no intention of selling as we look to build for the future. He is a player whose career we have fostered and developed and he was only a year into his new four year contract.

"Such has been the attention from Real Madrid and so great is Gareth’s desire to join them, that we have taken the view that the player will not be sufficiently committed to our campaign in the current season."
