Ozil makes impressive debut as Arsenal beat Sunderland 3-1

Much of the pre-match talk had been about new signing Mesut Ozil making his debut for Arsenal against Sunderland, but Welsh midfielder Aaron Ramsey stole the show as he grabbed a brace whilst Olivier Giroud kept up his good early season form with the opening goal.

Arsenal started with a new look midfield with Mathieu Flamini, Aaron Ramsey and Jack Wilshere behind Mesut Ozil and the Gunners opted to play Theo Walcott and Olivier Giroud as an up front pairing. Sunderland have been very busy in the transfer window and started six of their new summer signings today.

The Gunners took control from the off, with Mesut Ozil putting in an impressive first showing for his new club. In the 11th minute the German playmaker sent through a wonderful ball for striker Olivier Giroud to convert to open the scoring.

The Gunners controlled most of the first half though, apart from one chance from Sunderland defender Diakite who cannoned a header off of the crossbar.

Sunderland started the second half brightly as substitute Craig Gardner levelled from the penalty spot in the 48th minute. Laurent Koscielny is earning a reputation for giving away penalties and a sloppy challenge would ensure the Black Cats were back in the tie.

There would be a few more scares before the Gunners finally wrapped up the victory. A superbly taken Aaron Ramsey goal from a Carl Jenkinson cross put Arsenal back in front and then Ramsey's second after good work from Mesut Ozil and Olivier Giroud wrapped up the three points for Arsenal.
