Rooney on fire as Man Utd crush Bayer Leverkusen

What a difference a couple of weeks makes. Three weeks ago many predicted that Wayne Rooney's Manchester United career would soon be over. Tonight, Wayne Rooney returned to the spotlight for the right reasons as he put in a stunning performance against Bayer Leverkusen; grabbing two goals.

Man Utd started the game with a familiar back five of De Gea, Evra, Ferdinand, Smalling and Vidic; whilst the midfield consisted of Carrick, Valencia, Kagawa, Fellaini and Rooney playing wide behind Robin Van Persie.

Bayer Leverkusen have been impressive so far this season in the Bundesliga and their manager, former Liverpool defender Sami Hyppia played a strong lineup including the attacking trio of Heung-Min Son, Stefan Kiessling and Sidney Sam.

The game would not kick start until the 11th minute, when Robin van Persie went close with a left footed strike from outside of the box, having received a good ball from Marouane Fellaini. In the 20th minute, Chris Smalling would go close but the ball sailed over the bar.

United would finally break the deadlock in the 22nd minute, after Wayne Rooney struck from the centre of the box high into the net after receiving a great cross from French fullb ack Patrice Evra

After the half time interval, Leverkusen came out a much stronger side. David De Gea had to be at his best to keep out a left footed shot from Sidney Sam whilst a few minutes later Son Heung-Min went close but the shot was blocked by United's defence. However, Leverkusen were back on level terms in the 54th minute as Simon Rolfes struck from outside of the box into the bottom left corner. A great goal from the German midfielder.

It wouldn't take long for United to be back in front though, as Robin van Persie collected a cross from Antonio Valencia and then pumped the ball into the top right corner, game on. United would later extend their lead after Rooney scored with his right foot from the left side of the box and then the match would be over as a contest as Antonio Valencia scored the fourth with the assist from Wayne Rooney

There would be time for a consolation from defender Omer Toprak, but the three points belonged to the Red Devils as United's manager David Moyes opened his Champions League account in the best possible fashion.
