Mourinho slams Tottenham defender Vertonghen
Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho was left fuming after the incident that saw the Blues' striker Fernando Torres sent off for a challenge on Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen. Replays showed that there was minimal contact, if any, from Torres.
In Chelsea's 1-1 draw at White Hart Lane with Spurs, the Blues fought back after half time to level through a goal by defender John Terry. However, with Chelsea chasing the win and a potential three points, a mid-air challenge between Belgium international Vertonghen and Spain international Torres left the Spaniard heading for the dressing room early on.
Referring to an incident between Tottenham and Aston Villa earlier in the week where Vertonghen left a rival player with their shorts down, Mourinho quipped: "This player is a special guy because three days ago he left an Aston Villa striker naked and did not receive the red card or concede the penalty.
"Vertonghen should not have played this game -- he should be suspended with the red card from Aston Villa. It is top of the most ridiculous situations in football, but today he changed the game, so I am not happy."
The Portuguese manager then slammed Vertonghen's behaviour in the incident with Torres: "The team was very, very strong until the moment the referee made a mistake, a big mistake that had a big influence on the result. The referee is not guilty -- the player [Vertonghen] is guilty. He pretended that Fernando had a big contact on him and the referee went on trust."
