William Carvalho: soon to join Arsenal?

Arsenal are said to be closing in on a move for Portuguese international midfielder William Carvalho. After missing out on a deal for Sami Khedira, it is reported that the Gunners are now hoping to secure a deal for Carvalho before the start of the new season.

Carvalho, who is rated by many as one of the best young prospects in Europe, is on the radar of several top teams but it is Arsenal who are believed to be in pole position to wrap up a deal for the Sporting Lisbon holding midfielder. The Gunners are apparently edging closer to paying a fee that matches the minimum release clause in his contract.

Manchester United and AS Roma were amongst the teams monitoring Carvalho in recent months but since United had a change of management and brought in Louis van Gaal, their interest in the youngster has recently cooled. AS Roma on the other hand are said to only be interested in a move for Carvalho should Kevin Strootman depart, and a deal that will see the Dutchman quit Italy is some way off.

That leaves Arsenal with an opportunity to wrap up a deal for the talented young midfielder in the next couple of weeks and thus complete Arsene Wenger's summer spending.
