Liverpool's hopes all over

Liverpools hopes all over

Liverpool hopes of a resurrecting their Premiership challenge appear to be over after losing 1-0 to West Ham at Upton Park. Mark Noble's penalty was enough to finish off the Reds.

It could've been so different early on as Yossi Benayoun wasted a glorious chance to put Liverpool in front against his old club.

West Ham had a great chance though as Luis Boa Morte spanked the ball over from 15 yards from a throw in and knock on which really should've given the Hammers the lead.

The Hammers again had a great chance as Upson pushed the ball long after a foul on Carlton Cole. The free kick was lined up by Noble, who spun the ball in and hit the head of Steve Finnan and hit the bar to prevent an owngoal.

In the second half, Luis Boa Morte picked up the ball greatly but Freddie Ljungberg was on the back post but completely misread the cross. Noble picked up the ball for the Hammers and Aurelio fouled to give the Hammers another opportunity from a set piece where they looked so dangerous.

From the resulting free kick, Boa Morte had the goal at his mercy but hit the ball wide. A disastrous miss.

Lucas came on and really started to make an impression as his ball went out wide to Torres, who then read a great ball through to the Brazilian who hit the ball wide.

Liverpool continued to threaten, and Dirk Kuyt was looking very dangerous around the area. From a corner, Sami Hyypia really should've found the net but cries for handball were ignored by the referee.

Matthew Etherington picked up the ball and ran from his own half and Ljungberg picked up the ball, and was fouled in the area in the last five seconds of time. Jamie Carragher was the culprit, giving the Hammers' the perfect opportunity wrap up the game.

Up stepped young Hammer Mark Noble for the penalty. Noble knocked the ball into the bottom right corner - and the points were West Ham's. It was his second goal of the season.
