Man United join chase for Sporting winger

Manchester United are reportedly set to offer stiff competition to Liverpool in the pursuit of Sporting attacker Gelson Martins.

A recent report from The Sun suggested that Reds boss Jurgen Klopp could shift his attention towards Martins with AS Roma playing hardball over a move for Mohamed Salah.

However, according to O Jogo, the Merseyside outfit may have to fend off interest from United for the attacker with Jose Mourinho said to be a huge fan of his services.

United were linked with a potential swoop for the forward a year ago, and the Special One is keen to revive his interest as he bids to add a new winger to his ranks.

Martins currently has a £46.5m release clause in his present deal, but Sporting could be willing to negotiate a lesser sum for his potential sale this summer.

The five-time Portugal international bagged six goals and nine assists during the course of the previous league season. He was also a regular in Sporting's Champions League campaign as he started all six group games.
