Chelsea plot winter raid for Real Madrid star

Chelsea boss Antonio Conte could reportedly lodge an attempt to sign Real Madrid attacker Gareth Bale during the winter transfer window.

The Wales international has struggled with a series of calf injuries over the past year, and according to Don Balon, his days are limited with the European champions.

Diego Costa is expected to join Atletico Madrid on a formal basis in the New Year, and Conte will reportedly use the funds available to pursue the ex-Tottenham ace.

However, the Blues are certain to face competition from rivals Manchester United, whose manager Jose Mourinho has previously insisted that he would fight with other clubs to sign the 28-year-old.

Bale recently missed Wales' World Cup qualifiers against Georgia and the Republic of Ireland, and this eventually cost his nation as they missed out on the global tournament in Russia.

Chelsea are currently positioned fourth in the Premier League standings following their 4-2 comeback win over Watford at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.
