Mascherano heading for Reds comeback

Liverpool have reportedly approached Barcelona midfielder Javier Mascherano, who is considering a potential move away from Camp Nou.

The Argentina international made nearly 100 league appearances for the Reds between 2007 and 2010 before sealing his switch to the Catalan giants.

Mascherano has primarily played second fiddle to Samuel Umtiti and Gerard Pique for the central defensive duties this term, and he is likely to push for an exit at the end of the season.

According to Diario Gol, Mascherano's compatriot Lionel Messi is convinced that the 33-year-old will pursue a fresh challenge next summer, and Barca could release him on a free - ahead of the expiry of his contract in 2019.

Liverpool are, however, not the sole club interested in Mascherano with Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus also keeping a close watch on his situation.

Jurgen Klopp has often been criticised for the lack of solidity in the defence, and Mascherano could emerge as an ideal partner for Joel Matip next season, despite his trailing age.
