Chelsea to pay world record fee for Atletico goalkeeper?

Chelsea are set to pay the £89m release clause of Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Jan Oblak as a replacement for Thibaut Courtois who is on his way to Spain, Mundo Deportivo reports.

Courtois, who failed to appear for training on Monday is keen on a move to Real Madrid, a move that will make him close to his family and Chelsea are preparing for that by readying a bid for the Atletico stopper.

The Belgian international has reportedly threatened to run down the remainder of his contract and leave for free next year if Chelsea refuse to let him go now.

With two days remaining for the transfer window in England to close, Chelsea have to ensure they move quickly to secure Oblak or any other goalkeeper target they have lined up to replace Courtois.

Jack Butland of Championship side Stoke City has been linked after Everton refused to negotiate the transfer of England number one goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.

Oblak is Atletico's first choice goalkeeper having made 37 appearances for the Spanish side in La Liga last season and could become the most expensive goalkeeper in the world if the move is completed.
