Pochettino reacts as lack of signings fail to stop Spurs against Newcastle
Tottenham Hotspur coach Mauricio Pochettino has suggested that luck played a part in their 2-1 Premier League win over Newcastle United on Saturday.
Dele Alli's 18th minute header ensured they begun their league campaign with a win despite not signing a single player before the closure of the transfer window on Thursday evening.
Alli's goal came after Joselu's 11th minute goal cancelled Jan Vertonghen's 8th minute opener.
Speaking to Sky Sports, he said: "I am so proud of the performance in the circumstances. Newcastle are a very good team and they had some chances to score more than one, but sometimes in football you need some luck as well as effort."
The former Southampton manager admitted that his side can still do better than they have done against Rafael Benitez's side.
Spurs got the second win of this season's Premier League after Manchester United defeated Leicester City by two goals to one on Friday night.
The North London side will face Fulham in their next Premier League game one week from today.
Spurs finished third in the league last season, and will be hoping to maintain or do better than that.
