Foster defends Cech amid recent criticism

Watford goalkeeper Ben Foster has symphatised with Arsenal shot-stopper Petr Cech, who has witnessed a tough beginning under Unai Emery this season.

The 36-year-old has been regarded as one of the best shot-stoppers in the Premier League era but he has struggled to adapt to the playing style under the new head coach.

Emery's approach of playing from the back has found Cech making some unwanted errors with his distribution but Foster has now defended him by indicating that the veteran may need time to adapt.

He told BBC Sport: "His strong points have always been being big and commanding and making saves, but the way football is going now you almost have to be one of those Ederson-type of goalkeepers. For a lot of goalies it really isn’t an easy thing to do. It’s going to take some time to get used to and I do feel sorry for him."

The majority of the Gunners fans have urged Emery to consider dropping Cech for summer signing Bernd Leno and it will be interesting to see whether the Spaniard will do so when the team return from the international break.

Arsenal have accumulated six points from their opening four matches and this sees them positioned ninth in the standings. Despite this, they have yet to keep a clean sheet with an average of two goals conceded per league game.
