Liverpool in advanced contract talks with Dutchman?

Liverpool open Wijnaldum contract talks

Liverpool are reportedly in advanced negotiations with midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum as they seek to extend his contract beyond the forthcoming campaign.

The 29-year-old has less than 16 months remaining on his existing deal with the Reds and there has recently been the speculation that he could leave the club in the summer.

However, according to Gazzetta dello Sport, the Merseyside outfit are eager to extend the stay of the Netherlands international and talks are already underway over a fresh three-year deal.

Wijnaldum has previously stated that he would favour a return to Dutch football at some point in the future but it appears likely that he will sign at least another contract with the Reds.

Wijnaldum has been with the Reds since the summer of 2016 when he was signed from then-relegated Newcastle United for £25m. He has contributed 18 goals from 177 appearances in all competitions.

Meanwhile, the versatile midfielder has represented the Dutch national team on 62 occasions, contributing 18 goals in the process.
