Liverpool provide update on Virgil van Dijk's injury
Liverpool have confirmed that Virgil van Dijk will undergo a surgery after he damaged his knee ligaments during the 2-2 Premier League draw against Everton on the road.
The Netherlands international suffered the setback in the opening 10 minutes of the contest after a rash tackle from goalkeeper Jordan Pickford which went unpunished due to an offside decision.
Van Dijk was forced to leave the pitch shortly after and it is now revealed that the centre-back needs an operation on his right knee in order to rectify the issue.
"Liverpool FC can confirm Virgil van Dijk will undergo surgery on the knee injury he sustained during Saturday’s 2-2 draw at Everton," a statement from the club's official website read.
The Reds have made an average start to the season by their high standards and they are currently three points behind leaders Everton. Van Dijk could potentially be absent for a lengthy period of time and that could hamper their title defence.
The Merseyside outfit have only Joe Gomez and Joel Matip as the fit centre-backs at the moment, but the likes of Fabinho and James Milner are capable of playing in the position.
