Manchester United missed out on signing Dayot Upamecano over £200,000 row
Manchester United missed out on signing Dayot Upamecano from Valenciennes in 2015 after they haggled over the transfer fee.
The 21-year-old is currently regarded as one of the best central defenders in European football and he was linked with numerous clubs this summer before he signed a contract extension with RB Leipzig.
Upamecano could leave the German outfit next summer for just £35m due to a release clause, but The Sun reports that the Red Devils could have signed him for less than £1m five years ago.
Back then, the Mancunian giants were negotiating his potential transfer from Valenciennes, but the deal broke down. The French side wanted £700,000 for their player, but United refused to pay anything more than £500,000.
Upamecano has recently acknowledged that he has been in contact with various sides and reports claim that Liverpool could make a move for his services in January.
The Merseyside giants are expected to be without Virgil van Dijk for the rest of the season after the Dutchman suffered a serious knee injury during the recent Merseyside derby.
