Manchester United striker Edinson Cavani has been urged to leave the club during the next transfer window.

The Uruguay international had an impressive debut season for the club last term, bagging 17 goals in all competitions.

He was convinced to stay for another year with the assurance of game time, but things have paved differently for him.

The Red Devils made a surprise summer decision to re-sign Cristiano Ronaldo, 12 years after he left the club.

Ronaldo has been the regular choice to lead the line. Cavani has made just one league start since the beginning of the season.

Speaking on TalkSPORT, Gus Poyet has now urged his compatriot to pursue a fresh challenge away from the Red Devils.

Cavani is unlikely to become a regular starter with Ronaldo fit and firing, and Poyet feels he should seek a winter exit.

Cavani has been linked with Newcastle United following their takeover by a Saudi-based consortium earlier this month.

He is also on the radar of Barcelona, but they are reluctant to meet his current weekly wages of around £250,000.
