Newcastle United want to sign Manchester United defensive target
Newcastle United are keen on signing Atletico Madrid defender Kieran Trippier during the January transfer window.
The England international was heavily linked with a return to the Premier League this summer with Arsenal and Manchester United.
United had entered talks for the 31-year-old, but they were put off in their pursuit as Atletico wanted the €40m release clause to be paid.
Trippier has continued to remain a regular starter for Atletico, but there has still been speculation that he wants to return to the Premier League.
According to reputed journalist Guillem Balague, the Magpies are now seriously interested in landing Trippier's signature this winter.
Trippier has the desire to return to England at the earliest possibility, but it remains unclear whether he will be tempted to join them.
The Magpies are currently deemed the richest club in world football after their recent takeover by a Saudi-based consortium.
Despite the takeover, their league form has seen no improvement. They are currently five points adrift of safety with no wins.
Eddie Howe was recently appointed as the new manager. The club will seek to add quality players in January to avoid the drop.
