Hans Vanaken to join West Ham
Club Brugge attacking midfielder Hans Vanaken will move to West Ham this week, as the Belgium international looks set to sign a four year deal at the London Stadium. The 29-year-old has been monitored by Hammers' scouts for several months, and a deal is likely to be agreed shortly.
Standing at 6 foot 5, Vanaken offers plenty of aerial ability but is also a great passer of the ball. It is possible that the Belgian will be paired with Tomas Soucek in the club's midfield, or could play a number 10 role behind a striker at the Hammers.
At 29, it is rare for Vanaken to have not have left his homeland after so long, and admitted in an interview that he had to take this opportunity.
West Ham will pay 8.5 million euros for the player.
Vanaken quipped “This may be my last chance to play abroad one day, and I want to take it. A lot has already been written about it. It’s no longer a surprise. I’ve thought about it. The club in question, West Ham, is interested, and so am I. Discussions with Club Brugge will begin on Monday. We’ll see where that takes us!”
