Chelsea are yet to convince Benfica over the January transfer of midfielder Enzo Fernandez, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The Blues have identified the Argentine as their main target this month but they face a tough task of convincing his club.

The west London giants are reluctant to trigger the £106m release clause in his contract and prefer to pay the fee in instalments.

In order to avoid Financial Fair Play sanctions, they are ready to pay a higher figure over a period of five to seven seasons.

For now, Benfica have no desire to accepting such an agreement and this could be a major stumbling block for the Blues.

Chelsea have already agreed personal terms with Fernandez, who has made it clear that he would like to move to London.

Benfica understand the desire of the young midfielder, but seem reluctant to accept staggered payments over a number of years.

Meanwhile, the Blues are determined to land Fernandez this month as there could be fierce competition for him in the summer.
