Tottenham enter race to sign Kalvin Phillips
Tottenham have joined Newcastle United in the race to sign out of favour Man City defensive midfielder Kalvin Phillips. The player has been warned that without regular first-team action, his place in England's Euro 2024 squad could be in jeopardy.
Newcastle United were leading the pack to sign Phillips, going as far as agreeing a fee with Manchester City to bring the former Leeds United player to St James' Park. However, last minute interest from Spurs appears to have derailed that deal.
The Toon Army had agreed a £4.5 million deal with City to sign Phillips, but Tottenham have now also matched that package and Phillips will have a big decision to make before the January transfer window closes.
Since Pep Guardiola brought Phillips to the club, he has not performed at the level that the City manager would expect, at one time even saying that the player returned from international duty overweight.
It is almost certain that Phillips with depart the Etihad Stadium this January, and possibly in the summer on a permanent basis.
