Varane signs for Como

Former Manchester United defender Raphael Varane has signed for Serie A newcomers Como on a free transfer.

The centre-back had three seasons with the Red Devils in the Premier League. He helped them win the Carabao Cup and FA Cup.

Despite this, the club were happy to release him when his contract expired this month. They did not trigger an extension clause.

Varane has now signed for Como in Serie A. The centre-back has accepted a staggering pay-cut to join Cesc Fabregas' side.

Como have ambitious plans ahead of their top-flight return and they have also signed Andrea Belotti and Alberto Moreno.

The club are aiming for more high-profile signings over the coming weeks to boost their chances of avoiding relegation.

Como seem to be following the same plan as Monza. The latter went on a spending spree and managed to beat the drop.

The arrival of Varane at Como could persuade more elite players to consider joining the Northern Italian side this summer.
