Chelsea eyeing free transfer for Henderson

Chelsea are exploring a free transfer for former Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson. 

The Blues are aiming to add more experience to the squad before the new season, and they have already made an approach for Brighton & Hove Albion striker Danny Welbeck.

The club are likewise looking to add a tried-and-tested Premier League midfielder and have their sights on landing Henderson from the Bees in the next couple of days.

Brentford are prepared to release Henderson on a free transfer if he were to agree on personal terms. The former Liverpool captain is open to the challenge at Chelsea.

The news comes as a huge surprise but it also suggests that manager Xabi Alonso wants more leadership qualities in midfield after missing out on landing Granit Xhaka.

Xhaka was a top target for Alonso after their time together at Bayer Leverkusen. However, Sunderland made it clear that their captain would not be leaving this summer at any price.
