Mourinho: transfer spending

Mourinho: transfer spending

As Jose Mourinho's tenure at the helm of Chelsea comes to an end, we analyse the expenditure Abramovich allowed Jose to spend. The good signings - and the bad - all of which added to a whopping total of £225.76m in three years at the club.

The Excellent Signings

Didier Drogba: he may have cost £24m, but he was worth every penny. Fast becoming one of the best strikers on the planet, Jose stuck by the Ivorian after a weak start and ultimately, Chelsea's weak form coincided with his absence.

Michael Essien: he also cost a fortune at £24.4m, but what an incredible signing. Capable of playing in defence or midfield, Essien is one of the strongest players in the Premiership and has scored some important goals and made some incredibly important tackles.

Ricardo Carvalho: one of Mourinho's first signings, his fellow countryman was a mainstay of Chelsea's defence and will be for a few more years at least. Partnering Terry to the best of his abilities, the pair helped Chelsea pick up back-to-back Premiership titles.

The Flops

Ashley Cole: coming to Arsenal with a lofty reputation as an attacking full back, at Chelsea Cole's attacking threat was nullified in exchange for more focus on defensive play. Cole has looked less than impressive for Chelsea and in Mourinho's tactics.

Andrei Shevchenko: a huge price of £30m was paid for the ageing striker, and the Ukrainian hitman has never looked the player he once was at AC Milan. On Tuesday night vs. Rosenborg he may have scored, but he cut a lonely pose for most of the game.

Asier Del Horno: Chelsea paid a whopping £8m for the Spanish left-back, who hung around only for a year. He is now struggling even to make Valencia's first team.

Mateja Kezman: Came with a reputation as a goalscorer, arrived at Chelsea as a weak, bad finisher who struggled to make the first team. Not long after he was shipped off out of Stamford Bridge.

Khalid Boulahrouz: arrived at Chelsea with a reputation as one of the best young defenders in Europe. Mourinho paid £8.5m for the Dutchman, who failed to impress and made a few high profile errors. Now at Sevilla on loan for the season.
