  • 29-year-old Ivory Coast international Drogba, who has followed Blues team-mates Frank Lampard, John Terry and Joe Cole in the last four years as the award winner, topped the Premiership goal-scoring chart last season. He scored the winning goals in the Carling Cup and FA Cup finals last term.

The official website of Chelsea quoted Pete Stevens, Sports Editor and Chairman of the selection panel, as saying: “Didier was the unanimous choice of the panel.

“He has had an exceptional year proving that he was not only the leading striker in the Premier League, but also in Europe.

“His thrilling style of play and spectacular goals played a large part in the Blues success in winning two Cup Finals.”
