Liverpool boss keen on signing Bundesliga centre-back

05 March 2019 - 15:09

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is reportedly keen on luring Borussia Monchengladbach defender Matthias Ginter to Anfield during the summer transfer window.

  • Chelsea to move for former Arsenal goalkeeper?
  • Arsenal handed huge boost ahead of Bournemouth clash

  • The 25-year-old was previously played under Klopp during their time together at Borussia Dortmund and it appears that the German head coach is keen a reunion.

According to Calciomercato, Klopp is considering a probable upgrade on Joel Matip and Ginter is regarded as the perfect fit to compete with Joe Gomez for a starting role with Virgil van Dijk in central defence.

Ginter, who has represented Germany on 23 occasions, has managed 19 appearances in the Bundesliga this campaign, while scoring one goal in the process.

His current deal with the Bundesliga club expires in the summer of 2021 but they have the option of extending the contract by a further year if required.

Matip is currently partnering Van Dijk at the heart of the Reds defence with both Gomez and Dejan Lovren spending time on the sidelines with leg and hamstring injuries respectively.
