Chelsea pummel Newcastle at St. James

A hardworking Chelsea display would be enough for the Blues to see off the threat of early season hopefuls Newcastle at St. James' Park on Saturday. Juan Mata, Didier Drogba and Salomon Kalou scored the goals that ensured the three points would be returning to London.

Prior to the game, Villas-Boas admitted that December would be the month on which his first season would be judged, and the new month started in the best possible way with a stunning 3-0 win over Newcastle.

3-0 - at times - was rather flatting for Newcastle, who had Tim Krul in inspired form in goal, keeping out the attacking prowess of Danny Sturridge throughout, and even saving a penalty from Frank Lampard.

In the 38th minute, the impressive Juan Mata found space on the flank to cross in for Ivory Coast international Didier Drogba, who planted a header past Krul to give Newcastle the lead.

Sturridge had two chances to extend the Blues' lead, but inspired keeper Tim Krul keep Chelsea at bay.

Danny Sturridge then won the blues a penalty, but Frank Lampard missed the fourth penalty of his career as Krul made a wonderful stop.

Into the second half and it would not be until the 89th minute that Chelsea would finally extend their lead, this time the goal came from Salomon Kalou. Fernando Torres burst through Newcastle's defence to tee up Kalou, who fired past Krul.

Finally, game set match came just a minute later, as Danny Sturridge finally scored the goal that his performance deserved.

Chelsea were clear winners, and stay comfortably placed in 4th.
