Man City keeper Hart plays down England captaincy

England goalkeeper Joe Hart has played down his chances of being named as the new national team captain today. The Manchester City shot stopper has been linked with the vacant role by many who believe that the keeper would be the perfect replacement for John Terry.

Last week, several pundits questioned whether Steven Gerrard's injury concerns mean that he would be a first choice candidate for the role, whilst Ashley Cole is believed to be unwilling to take the armband. In addition, Frank Lampard is not expected to be a first team regular in the Euro 2012 tournament. Rio Ferdinand also last week rejected talk that he would be named captain for the summer showpiece.


Now Joe Hart has been suggested as the next captain of his country. The keeper said: 


"I am flattered to be linked with it but anyone who's having a consistent run in the England side is being linked with it.


"There are a lot stronger candidates than me. I don't have a view on who should be captain. As long as I'm playing I don't care.


"I have got a really important season with games for Manchester City and hopefully a couple for England coming up. That is all I am concentrating on at the moment."
